Chennai, Nov 23, 2021: As a result of heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, four houses collapsed in Karungalpatti in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district. It is feared that four people are trapped under the debris. A rescue operation is underway at present.
Thirteen people have been rescued and sent to a government hospital in Salem, ANI news agency reported. The fire department is in the process of clearing the debris.
The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rain at isolated places in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu for Tuesday. The IMD also forecast light to moderate rain in isolated places in the remaining districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

During the ongoing north east monsoon, Tamil Nadu has received 61 per cent excess rainfall. Puducherry has also had unprecedented rainfall and as much as 7,000 hectares of paddy fields, horticulture crop and other farm produce have been affected.An incessant downpour has lashed parts of South India this season, causing disruption in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, apart from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
