The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had raided Arpita Mukherjee’s house on July 22 and recovered Rs 21.90 crore in cash. The probe agency also recovered Rs 56 lakh in foreign currency and gold worth Rs 76 lakh.

Days afterwards, the ED recovered another Rs 28.90 crore in cash, over 5 kg gold and several documents from Arpita Mukherjee’s second apartment.

The ED called Arpita Mukherjee a "close associate" of Partha Chatterjee who was involved in an alleged recruitment scam of Group ‘C’ & ‘D’ staff, Assistant Teachers of classes IX-XII and primary teachers.

The recovered amount is suspected to be the proceeds of crime from the teacher recruitment scam. Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee were sent to ED custody till August 3.

The Trinamool Congress suspended Partha Chatterjee on Thursday. Earlier, Partha Chatterjee was removed from the Bengal ministry following his arrest by the ED in the teachers recruitment scam case.

His suspension from the party came after pressure came from both within the party and the Opposition to take action against the now suspended minister.
