Belagavi, May 23, 2024: At least 46 people fell ill, reporting uneasiness and diarrhoea following a suspected case of food poisoning in Karnataka’s Belagavi, authorities said on Wednesday.
Several people in Belagavi’s Hoolikatti village, who consumed prasadam at the Bhireshwar and Karemma fair complained of stomach pain, vomiting and dysentery.
At least eight people were admitted to the Dharwad hospital. All of them were pronounced out of danger after minor treatment by the doctors.
The incident took place in the Hoolikatti village of Savadatti taluk in Belagavi district.
"Eight people admitted at the hospital in Dharwad are all out of danger. It was the annual fair of the temple in the village. Officials are investigating if this had happened due to consumption of the prasadam or contaminated water", Belagavi SP Babasab Nemagoud said.
This came a week after a case was lodged against the Karnataka State Cricket Association management for allegedly serving stale food to the audience during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 T20 cricket match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 12.
A 23-year-old cricket enthusiast at the stadium lodged a complaint saying he experienced stomach pain and collapsed while seated. First aid was administered to him in an ambulance outside the stadium with the assistance of stadium staff. Doctors confirmed it was due to food poisoning.
