6 die of suffocation after sleeping in tempo with burning tandoor

Delhi, Nov 29, 2017 : Six men who worked with a catering service in wedding events, on early Tuesday died of asphyxia, while they were sleeping with a burning urban-oven (tandoor) in a tempo outside a marriage venue in Delhi Cantonment area, police said.

They said the incident was reported to police around 2 am by Nirmal, a supervisor when he went to check them in the vehicle.

"The deceased, Amit, Pankaj, Anil, Kamal, Awad Lal and Deep Chand - all in the age group of 30-35 years - were the natives of Uttarkhand and lived in rented accommodation at Chandra Vihar in Nangloi.

They were taken to a nearby hospital where doctor declared all of them brought dead," said deputy commissioner of police Sibesh Singh.

"During investigation, it was found that the victims had gone for catering work in a marriage function at a community centre in Delhi Cantt area. After the function got over, they carried all the cooking equipment, including a tandoor at the tempo trunk and went to another venue around 12.30 am on Mall Road," said Singh.

"They were not aware of the fire burning inside the oven and slept in the tempo with its doors shut. They died of asphyxia," the officer added.
