8 dead, 20 injured in bus accident near Idukki

Idukki, March 26, 2013:  The toll in Monday’s accident at Thekinkanam near here in which a tourist bus carrying students of the Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology plunged into a ravine has risen to eight.

The deceased have been identified as Hemanth, Sreejesh , Jithin, Sharath Chandran, Shiju, Manju Balakrishnana, Vignesh and Raj Kumar.

The bus, with the students of Vellanad Sarabhai Engineering College on an excursion, was on its way to Thiruvananthapuram. There were 43 persons, 28 boys and 13 girls along with parents of some students and the bus workers, in the bus while the accident occurred.

The incident happened at 12.30 pm while the gang was going to Monnar after visiting Kodaikanal. 

The injured have been admitted to Adimali Taluk Hospital and some other hospitals nearby. The condition of some injured persons is said to be critical.

State Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the medical expenses for all those injured would be borne by the government.

"Right now, our aim is to see that the injured get the best treatment and authorities are ensuring that," he said.
