AAP to launch massive campaign, to burn Centre’s Delhi ordinance copies

New Delhi, June 30, 2023: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will launch a phase-wise campaign from July 3 against the central government’s Delhi ordinance by burning copies of it.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal will burn copies of the ordinance on the control of services in the national capital during the campaign.

 

The Centre brought an ordinance on May 19 to curtail the powers of Delhi’s elected government. The ordinance was promulgated days after the Supreme Court handed over control of services in Delhi to the elected government, excluding those related to police, public order and land.

Following this, Arvind Kejriwal has been meeting different opposition parties across the country to garner support, claiming the ordinance will destroy the federal structure of the country.

While several non-BJP parties have supported the AAP over the ordinance, Congress is yet to denounce the issue.

During the opposition huddle in Patna on June 23, Arvind Kejriwal had insisted that the issue be brought up during the meeting but it escalated into a political slugfest.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee then asked the AAP and the Congress to sort out their differences on the Delhi ordinance issue over tea and biscuits at a later date, reminding them that the Patna opposition meeting was not the ideal forum for such discussion, sources said.

Arvind Kejriwal has been seeking a legislative blockade of the bill after it was brought to Parliament for consideration. While the result in the Lok Sabha was a foregone conclusion, the chance to defeat the bill in the Rajya Sabha is still an open game.

That is why the AAP is seeking Congress’s support for blocking the ordinance in the Upper House.

Congress is the largest opposition party in the Rajya Sabha with 31 members. Defeating the bill without the support of the Congress is almost impossible as the BJP-led NDA has the support of 109 MPs in the Upper House out of the current strength of 238.
