BANGALORE, July 6: The State government on Tuesday appointed N Achuta Rao, a 1976 batch officer as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police.
With the appointment of Rao, who will take charge from the incumbent S T Ramesh, the controversy over the post of DG&IGP, after the retirement of Dr Ajai Kumar Singh early this year, has ended.
Rao was serving as the Director General of Police, CID, Special Units and Economic Offences. He has obtained Master of Science Degree from Andhra University and Master of Business Management Degree at Southern Cross University in New South Wales, Australia.
Rao joined the Indian Police Service in 1976, served as the assistant superintendent of police from 1978 to 80 at various places. He served as superintendent of police in Bangalore, Raichur, Dharwad, Mangalore and other places for 10 years, worked as Deputy Inspector General from 1991 to 1997, as Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum, served as Inspector General of Police central range and IGP (Administration) from 1999 to 2002, worked as Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City and Director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation Limited.
He has been decorated with the President’s Police Medal for meritorious service. He worked as Additional Director General of Police (Administration) from May 2003. He was appointed as CID chief in February this year.
The ceremony to hand over charge is likely to take place after Ramesh, who was in Delhi on Tuesday, returns.
Ramesh will continue to hold the office of the DG of the Police Housing Corporation. He will relinquish the additional post of DG&IGP.
