Lakshadweep, Jul 06, 2021: The Lakshadweep administration has rejected the application of LDF MPs to visit the island in the wake of protest over reforms proposed for the island.
Citing the police report, the administration said the proposed visit of MPs from Kerala may provoke the local people, political parties/activists, social workers against the present administration leading to protests.
Earlier a similar application by UDF MP’s was also declined by the administration on similar grounds.
The present situation is not conducive for the visit of politicians as such visits may instigate the locals and create disturbances in these highly sensitive islands, the administration said.
"There is every possibility of public gathering and such gathering may lead to Covid spread in the islands thereby affecting the efforts taken by the administration in its fight against the pandemic," the administration said.
Elamaram Kareem, V Sivadasan, AM Ariff, Binoy Viswam, MV Shreyams Kumar, K Somaprasad, Thomas Chazhikadan & John Brittas had sought permission to visit the island.
Lakshadweep has been witnessing protests by various political parties ever since the administration started implementing reform measures in the islands.
The MPs stated the purpose of the visit was to access the impact of administrative actions and reforms under the present administrator on the people of Lakshadweep.
The administration further pointed out that the application for the entry permit by the MPs is not legally maintainable as per provisions on the grounds. It also said that the MPs failed to remit the application fees.
