New Delhi, Jan 11, 2023: Nearly 1000 flights across the United States, according to a tracker website FlightAware, have been affected by a massive computer outage, leaving travellers stranded across the country and outside. The US’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is ’experiencing an outage that is impacting the update of Notice to Air Missions system (NOTAMs)’ and that ’all flights are unable to be released at this time’.

Domestic departures in the US have been halted till 9 am Eastern Time, or 7:30 pm IST, "to allow the agency to validate the integrity of flight and safety information", the FAA said.

The FAA system that alerts pilots and other flight personnel about hazards or any changes to airport facility services and relevant procedures was not processing updated information, the regulator’s website showed this evening.

Over 1,200 flights have been delayed within, into, or out of the United States today, flight tracking website FlightAware showed. It was not immediately clear if the outage was the only factor.

Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX, said the FAA is working to resolve the issue, adding that passengers are advised to check their flight status.

“The FAA is working to resolve a national systems issue that is impacting flights early this morning. Please check your flight status and we will share updates as the FAA provides them,” Los Angeles airport tweeted.
