Amid price hike, tomatoes worth Rs 1.5 lakh stolen in Hassan; case filed

Hassan, July 06, 2023: Amid soaring tomato prices at over Rs 100 per kg, a few unidentified people in Hassan district stole tomatoes worth Rs 1.5 lakh from a farm and fled, the police said on Wednesday.

Upon reaching the farm in Goni Somanahalli village, the farmer, Dharani, was shocked to see his missing produce, following which he filed a complaint with the Halebeedu police station.

 

According to the farmer, the thieves entered the farm with around 50–60 bags, filled them with tomatoes worth 1.5 lakhs, and fled immediately.

The police have filed a case under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in relation to the case.

As per information, the current price of tomatoes in Bengaluru ranges between Rs 100 - 120 per kg. The skyrocketing tomato prices can be attributed to the lack of rainfall in certain parts of Karnataka this year and the high prices of fertilisers.
