Istanbul, Feb 13, 2023: A fresh 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey on Sunday, almost a week after a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook Turkey and Syria. The epicenter was near the southern city of Kahramanmaras, one of the worst-hit cities.

"A magnitude 4.7, 24 km SSE of Kahramanmaras, Turkey. Time 00:03 hrs; Location: 37.390°N 37.048°E; Depth: 15.7," United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

On Sunday, more survivors were rescued from the debris, about a week after one of the most devastating earthquakes to strike Turkey and Syria. Meanwhile, the Turkish authorities are working to maintain stability in the affected area and have initiated legal proceedings with regard to the building collapses.

As the likelihood of discovering more survivors decreases, the number of casualties from Monday’s earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks in Turkey and Syria has surpassed 34,000 and is expected to increase further. This earthquake is now the deadliest to hit Turkey since 1939. In Antakya, one of the cities hardest hit by the disaster, business owners cleared out their stores on Sunday to guard against theft by looters.

Reports of deteriorating security conditions have been noted by both residents and aid workers from other cities, with widespread accounts of looting at collapsed homes and businesses.
