Arrested Indian Oil Executive Was In Touch With ’Known’ ISIS Members Online

Jaipur, Dec 11, 2015:  An Indian Oil Corporation executive who was arrested in Jaipur yesterday for allegedly recruiting for ISIS was in a "two-way communication online with known and active members" of the terror group, the police said today.

Mohammad Siraj ud Din, who worked as a marketing manager with the state-run oil company, was allegedly trying to influence young Muslims the through internet to join ISIS. He was arrested by the Anti-Terror Squad wing of the Rajasthan Police under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and will be produced in court today.

"He was communicating with significant ISIS members online and based abroad... He was also recruiting people for ISIS online, many of these in various countries and in India," said Alok Tripathi, Additional Director General of Police, ATS. His activities were restricted to social media with "no concrete activity on the ground," he said.

According to the police, Siraj ud Din, who belongs to Gulbarga in Karnataka, posted messages, photos and videos on WhatsApp and Facebook to spread the ideology of ISIS, which seeks to establish a caliphate and controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.

A data analysis of his internet activities revealed that he was deeply influenced by the extremist group and was "active in encouraging Muslim youths for (joining) ISIS activities," police said.
