New Delhi, Oct 04, 2023: India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale, on Wednesday, October 4, won the gold medal in the compound mixed team event in archery. The duo defeated the South Korean pair of So Chaewon and Joo Jaehoon 159-158 at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre Final Field.
Jyothi and Ojas also made sure that India racked up their 71st medal, their highest in the history of the Asian Games. Back in the 2018 Jakarta Games, India had won 70 medals. India also equalled their best gold medal tally of 16 that they achieved four years ago.
Jyothi and Ojas had to fight hard to win the gold medal. After End 1, India led their opponents 40-39. In the second, India held on to their slender lead with the scorecard reading 80-79. But after Ojas shot 9, India lost the lead after the third end.
With the scorecard reading 119-119, the match could have gone either way. However, South Korea’s So shot nine, giving India the lead. Although South Korea hit 10s in their next two shots, India made sure of not allowing them to stage a comeback.
Jyothi and Ojas made a brilliant start to the day after beating the Malaysian pair of Binti Mat Salleh Fatin Nurfatehah and Bin Muzuki Mohd Juwaidi 158-155.
Thereafter, the Indian pair confirmed themselves a medal after defeating Kazakhstan’s Adel Zhexenbinova and Andrey Tyutyun in the semi-final.
India have now won 16 gold, 26 silver and 29 bronze medals in the Hangzhou Games and have a chance to add to add more to their tally. China is currently on top with 164 golds, 90 silvers and 46 bronze medals. Japan and South Korea are second and third in the list.
