BJP Invited To Form Government In Manipur, Oath Ceremony Tomorrow

Imphal, March 14, 2017:  The BJP has been invited to form the government in Manipur, with Nongthombam Biren Singh at its head, by Governor Najma Heptullah. The oath ceremony will be held tomorrow. The party, which had won 21 seats -- seven less than the Congress -- made a bid for power claiming it has the support of 33 legislators in the 60-member assembly. Even though the Congress staked claim yesterday after a daylong drama, the Governor said she was satisfied with the BJP’s claims.

The National People’s Party (NPP), founded by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma and the Naga People’s Front (NPF), each with four seats, have offered support to the BJP. So has the Lok Janshakti Party of Ram Vilas Paswan, which is already a BJP ally.

Sources said a legislator each from the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have also turned rebel and offered support to the BJP. So has one independent legislator.
