Belagavi, April 15, 2024: Karnataka BJP leader Sanjay Patil has stoked a controversy after he suggested Congress leader and state Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar take "one extra peg" to sleep well at night.
Taking a jibe at Hebbalkar, former BJP MLA Sanjay Patil said that the rise of BJP in Karnataka would make Hebbalkar worry a lot and suggested she take "a sleeping pill or an extra peg to get a good night’s sleep".
"I have worked as in-charge across eight different regions in Karnataka. In Belagavi, a large number of women are coming out in support of the BJP. This is why I would want my elder sister (Lakshmi Hebbalkar) to have a sleeping pill or an extra peg to get a good night’s sleep. It will also be difficult for her to see Ramesh Jarkiholi campaigning there," Patil said while addressing a gathering in Belagavi on Saturday.
The Karnataka Congress hit out at the BJP and said that Sanjay Patil "targeted and insulted" all women through his remarks on Laxmi Hebbalkar. The party also said that the "BJP’s anti-women attitude is increasing".
"Whoever looks down on women means that their downfall has begun. The decline of BJP and JDS parties has started, so their anti-women attitude is increasing. Like the Kauravas and Ravana, the BJP and JDS will surely be annihilated," Karnataka Congress said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Notably, Hebbalkar’s son Mrinal Ravindra Hebbalkar is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Belagavi seat against BJP candidate and former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar.
