Bangalore, Jan 4, 2010: In what can be see as a big relief for chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, the BJP in Karnataka has emerged as the single largest party in panchayat polls on Tuesday. However, no clear winner has emerged in the polls. The ruling BJP has managed to win in 12 districts out of the 30 districts in which polls were held. Congress leads in four and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in four and hung verdict is predicted in 10 seats.
The BJP, Congress and JD-S were locked in a three-way fight in a majority of the 1,013 zila and 3,659 taluka panchayat seats.
Yeddyurappa, who is facing charges of favouring his kin with prime land in and around Bangalore, led his party in the poll battle.
These are the first elections to the local governing councils after the BJP came to power in the state in May 2008.
