Dharwad, April 19, 2023: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) national president Tejasvi Surya stated with "deep anguish" that BJP Yuva Morcha (BYJM) leader Praveen Kammar had been killed in Karnataka’s Dharwad on Tuesday night. Taking to Twitter, Surya said that he suspected political rivalry as the cause behind the alleged crime and sought immediate action. The police said the matter will be probed and that no one will be spared whether they were directly or indirectly involved in the murder.

A case has been registered and three persons have been detained.

Superintendent of Police B Lokesh said the incident took place during the Goddess Udachamma Devi temple festival at Kottur village in the district.

Tejasvi Surya shared, "With deep anguish, we share the news of the murder of BJYM Dharwad Unit Executive Member & Kottur Gram Panchayat VP, Sri Praveen Kammar. He was brutally murdered by suspected political rivals late last night. BJYM demands immediate arrest of the killers & pray for his Sadgati."

"It is condemnable that an act like murder has taken place in the Dharwad district, which has been quiet for the past few years. I demand that the culprits be arrested soon and punished severely," he added.

The police said the murder was carried out after a clash with a few persons who were in an inebriated state.

The police officer added that Kumar intervened to pacify them but the persons who were in a drunken state stabbed him to death.

"We have detained three people and are interrogating them," he told PTI, adding that a case has been registered.

This comes after BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru was hacked to death with weapons by unidentified people in front of his broiler shop on July 26, 2022. The killing triggered tensions in several parts in the Dakshina Kannada district. Restrictions under section 144 of the Indian Penal Code were also imposed in Puttar last year in the wake of the incident.

Karnataka Police arrested 10 people in connection with the crime, which faced severe backlash too. The father of the two accused, Shafiq Ballere and Zaqir Savanuru, said they were targeted because of their religious identity.
