Bandh hits normal life in Bengaluru

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, Jan 25, 2018 : Normal life has come to a halt in Bengaluru as the bandh called by pro-Kannada organisations on the Mahadayi dispute continues.

Though BMTC buses are not running, private vehicles hit the roads. Commuters are alleging that the auto drivers are demanding excess fair. Metro started functioning at the normal time but with more security at the stations. Only one entrance of the stations remains open.

Protestors pelted stones at a hotel in Malleswaram.

Education institutions remain shut. IT companies including Infosys and Wipro had decided to suspend the operations.

Protesters gathered at Town Hall for demonstration. They will rally to Freedom Park.

Called by a network of Kannada organisations, the bandh’s objective is to highlight Karnataka’s case in the Mahadayi river water dispute with neighbouring Goa.

Politics is in the air, too. The bandh coincides with BJP national president Amit Shah’s public rally in Mysuru, causing anxious moments to his party. The ruling Congress is backing the protests.
