Bengaluru police resort to lathi charge as New Year Celebrations go out of control

Bengaluru, Jan 1, 2023: Streets of Bengaluru were flooded with people on New Year’s eve with cafes and eateries bustling visitors after two years of restrictions that were necessitated by the Covid pandemic. People, however, were seen flouting the mask mandate that the authorities had brought back keeping in mind the rise in Covid cases globally.

Thousands of people thronged hubs like MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street and the surrounding areas to ring in the New Year, but the crowd was reportedly still slightly smaller than pre-Covid times, a Deccan Herald report said, adding that an unprecedented footfall was seen at Koramangala.

The police resorted to the lathi charge as the huge crowd gathered in Kormangala went out of control. According to the police they had to go for a lathi charge as people standing outside pubs were staring at people dancing inside.

A massive contingent of police was deployed at MG Road, Brigade Road, and Church Street. To ensure the safety of women, the police created 37 women’s safety islands in the CBD areas and across the city. Watch towers were put up every 100m.
