Bihar DIG’s son beaten to death outside Gangtok pub

Gangtok, May 20: Sikkim police has arrested five youths on charges of beating to death the son of a Bihar DIG, who was a third year engineering student of Sikkim Manipal Insistute of Technology.

Police said Rakshit Singh Meena, died hours after being beaten outside Café Live and Loud, a pub-cum-nightclub by a group of five youths,  who were later arrested from various places of Gangtok on Sunday.

The incident took place between 1 and 1.30 am post Saturday midnight when Rakshit Singh Meena along with other engineering students of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Mazitar were leaving the pub.

He was the only son of Purnia range DIG of Bihar Police B.S.Meena, a native of Rajasthan.

Those arrested in the high profile incident are Gurmey Wangchuk (35) (son of Urban Development department secretary Topjyor Dorjee); others are Bidhan Pradhan (32), Loden Sherpa (32) of Darjeeling, Sonam Namgyal (31) and Ugen Namgyal (21) and the sixth accused is still at large, Sikkim Police Superintendent (East) Manoj Tiwari said.

They were identified on the basis of mobile phone video shot by the deceased’s friend while dancing inside the club on Saturday midnight.

Gurmey Wangchuk was arrested first, who confessed of having knocked down Rakshit along with other friends.

On the fateful night, Rakshit and his friends had checked in at a local hotel at Arithang area here before leaving for the nightclub.

Inside the club, the accused boys alleged the engineering students of teasing their female friends, said to be the main reason behind the clash.

Rakshit was waiting for his friends outside the pub, where around six men allegedly started beating him and chased his other friends from the spot. They later returned, picked up Rakshit and rushed to the hotel at Arithang.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Manipal Referral Hospital on  early Sunday morning. On the other hand, bouncers inside the club had asked the boys to do whatever they wanted outside the club premises.

SP Manoj Tiwari said the prime accused Gurmey Wangchuk was arrested after being identified from the mobile phone video  and this was also corroborated by the bouncers on duty. The other four accused were arrested on the basis of Wangchuk’s account of the incident.

All the six arrested youths have been booked under IPC Section 302, 201 and 34.

They would be taken into 5-days police remand for further investigation into the incident, added Tiwari.

The deceased boy’s parents who reached Gangtok later in the afternoon were inconsolable and were not in a position to comment on the incident.

Meena’s body has been flown to Jaipur for final rites.
