Belguam, Dec 24: The doctors attending to the victim said though she was out of danger, she needed extensive facial reconstruction to make her look normal.
The incident took place in Davanagere, central Karnataka, on Saturday when the 19-year-old victim was on her way back home around 9.30 pm after rehearsing for New Year celebrations at her college. Police sources said the accused, Prithvi, was known to the girl, who is a first-year student of BCA at a private college.
According to the Davanagere police, Prithvi intercepted the girl while she was walking homewards with her sister from the campus. He told the victim’s sister that he wanted to talk to her about something and would drop her home later. He took her to a desolated place behind Bapuji auditorium and proposed to her, to which she refused.
Enraged, he tried to rape her.
“When he tried to rape her, she put up a fight and punched him several times. He pushed her to the ground. Before she could get up, He smashed her head with a big stone,” a police officer said.
The left side of the victim’s face was badly injured; her jaw bone was fractured and she started bleeding profusely.
Seeing her plight, the accused escaped from the spot on his motorbike.
The victim managed to regain balance and reached home. Her horrified parents immediately admitted her to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment.
A complaint was lodged with the police who apprehended Prithvi on Sunday.
According to the police, Prithvi’s versions were inconsistent. He claimed that the victim accompanied him at her wish.
He also contended that they met their common friend midway. Apparently, the common friend is now absconding.
The doctors attending to the victim said though she was out of danger, she needed extensive facial reconstruction to make her look normal. The victim is not in a position to speak and it might take a week for the police to record her detailed statement.
