Budget 2024: Nirmala Sitharaman promises 2 crore houses in 5 years amid rising population

New Delhi, Feb 01, 2024: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said the government will build two crore houses in the next five years under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Gramin Yojana to meet the requirements arising from the increase in the number of families.

Presenting the interim Budget 2024-25 of the government in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman said, "Two crore more houses will be built in the next five years to meet the requirements arising from the increase in the number of families."

She said despite the challenges arising due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government was close to achieving the target of building three crore houses.

"Despite the challenges of the pandemic, PM Awas Gramin Yojana’s implementation continued. We are close to achieving the target of three crore houses. And two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years to meet the requirements arising from the increase in the number of families," she said.

The Finance Minister said the government’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047 is that of a prosperous nation with modern infrastructure while providing opportunities for all people and all regions to reach their potential.

"Earning Sabka Vishwas, the next five years will be of unprecedented development and of building a developed India by 2047. The trinity of democracy, demography, and diversity backed by Sabka Prayas has the potential to fulfill aspirations of every Indian," Sitharaman said.
