CBI moves Delhi High Court against Chautala bail

New Delhi, October 9, 2014: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday moved the Delhi High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to the Indian National Lok Dal chief and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala in the teachers’ recruitment scam case.

chautala.Chautala, who was granted the bail on medical grounds in May this year, has been campaigning in Haryana which votes next week on October 15.

The 79-year-old INLD chief, his son Ajay and eight others were convicted and sentenced in January last year to 10 years in jail for illegal recruitment of over 3,000 junior teachers in 2000.

Chautala had volunteered on September 26 that he would surrender after which he was asked to surrender on October 17, two days after the polls.

Among the others convicted in the case, 44 were sentenced to four years in jail while one was handed a five-year prison term. All of them were found guilty of cheating, forgery, using fake documents and conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and of abusing their official positions under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Chautala was Haryana’s chief minister for six months between 1980 and 1990, for five days in July 1990 and for 14 days in 1991. Finally, he had a complete five-year tenure starting in 1999.
