Confession to girlfriend led to Bitti’s arrest

Kannur,Kerala, Mar 12, 2013 : Rajasthan cop identifies Bitti, team takes him to Rajasthan. The Kerala Police were able to nab Bitti Mohanty, a rape convict who had jumped parole and was living in Kannur under cover, because of the “confession” he made to his girlfriend, it is learnt.

 

A couple of anonymous letters revealing his identity, were posted to the headquarters of State Bank of Travancore (SBT) in Thiruvananthapuram and to the manager of the Madai branch in Kannur where he worked as Raghav Rajan, a probationary officer on training, which paved the way for his arrest two days ago.

Sources told Deccan Herald that letters and subsequent anonymous phone calls originated from the kin of the girl, with whom Mohanty had an affair. Bitti befriended the girl during the brief training period at Thiruvananthapuram about a year ago. Later, the son of former Odisha DGP B B Mohanty was posted to Madai and the girl in Kozhikode district. It is not known whether the duo had worked together.

When the relationship turned serious and talks of marriage cropped up, Mohanty is said to have confessed before his ladylove about his tainted past and that he was living under cover. Sources said Bitti had confessed to the girl that if given a chance, he would be a better human being.

The girl accepted this and narrated the entire story to her parents who smelt danger and opposed the match, much against the girl’s wishes. But the girl remained stubborn and this made the parents reveal Raghav Rajan’s identity by sending anonymous letters, it is learnt.

The ordinary mail posted from Kozhikode incidentally reached Bitti who hid it. The other letter, however, reached the bank’s headquarters and soon bank authorities filed a complaint with the state director-general of police.

The police, however, are neither confirming nor rejecting rumours floating around. When contacted, all that Thaliparambu Deputy Superintendent of Police K S Sudarshan, who is heading the investigating team, told Deccan Herald: “We received a complaint from bank officials and upon acting on it, we found the complaint to be true. I can’t tell you anything concrete about anonymous letters”.

The DySP was of the opinion that the police would find it difficult to identify Bitti as the Rajasthan Police team which arrived at Kannur on Monday had nothing to prove the convict’s credentials. “The Rajasthan Police came with only paper cuttings of 2006 when Bitti was arrested and convicted in the rape case. No finger prints or blood samples were available,” he said.

Sub-Inspector Hemender of Lal Kothi station in Rajasthan, however, identified the elusive convict he had nabbed seven years ago, at the Payyanur Circle Office on Monday evening. He identified Bitti by his height and a couple of marks on his forehead and the left foot.
