Congress fields MLA Ajay Rai against Modi in Varanasi

New Delhi, April 8, 2014: The Congress has fielded party legislator Ajay Rai against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.

"Rai is a grassroots worker who can ably lead people in Varanasi," Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said announcing the candidature.

Rai’s naming puts to rest speculation that the party could field veterans such as Rashid Alvi and Digvijaya Singh.

The other challenger to Modi from Varanasi is AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal.

The others vying for the seat are SP’s Kailash Chaurasia, BSP’s Vijay Prakash Jaisawal and Independent Mukhtar Ansari.
