New Delhi, June 1, 2014: Reports confirm that former parliamentary affairs minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath has been appointed as the "pro tem Speaker" in the newly constituted Lok Sabha with BJP in absolute majority.
A notification issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat said President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed him to perform the duties of the Speaker, until a permanent speaker is elected and appointed. The Narendra Modi government had recently conveyed its recommendation to President Mukherjee to appoint Kamal Nath, who is the senior most member of the Lower House (time wise), as pro tem Speaker. The first sitting of the newly elected parliament is expected on June 4, 2014.
The pro tem Speaker performs the duties of the office of the Speaker from the commencement of the sitting of the Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker. Kamal Nath, who was minister for urban development and parliamentary affairs in the last government, he was elected from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh for the ninth term.
