New Delhi, Mar 28, 2018 : The Congress has now taken lead in moving an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra contending that he has failed to address the issues raised by the four apex Court judges in their unprecedented press conference in January this year.
A draft of the proposal to launch the impeachment proceedings against Misra in the Rajya Sabha has been circulated among the Opposition parties.
It is learnt that some leaders of the Congress, the NCP and the Left parties have already signed the letter which is to be submitted to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu.
Earlier, the CPI(M) had taken the lead with its general secretary Sitaram Yechury speaking in favour of the impeachment motion.
As per the rules, an impeachment motion can be admitted in the Rajya Sabha if it has the support of 50 members. In the Lok Sabha, such an initiative needs the backing of 100 members.
Congress sources said the Trinamool Congress leadership was yet to respond to the move and efforts were on to rope in Shiv Sena as well.
Once a letter is submitted, the Rajya Sabha Chairman forms a committee of Supreme Court judges to investigate the matter. Impeachment proceedings are launched after receiving the reports of the committee.
