Cyclone Gulab could cross over to Arabian Sea to be reborn as Cyclone Shaheen

New Delhi, Sep 28, 2021: Cyclone Gulab, which weakened into a deep depression over Telangana, South Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha region since Monday night, may move to the Arabian Sea and be reborn as Cyclone Shaheen.

 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in a fresh bulletin, “It is likely that the remnant of the present deep depression could emerge into Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast around 30th September”

The weather department has further warned, “ there is a likelihood for the system to further intensify over Northeast Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours.”

Rare Phenomenon

The IMD has also said that the probability of the formation of a depression over the Arabian Sea is “moderate” in the next 96-120 hours. Cyclone Gulab, after weakening into a deep depression, is now moving over North Telangana, adjoining South Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha region.

Reports have said over the next 24 hours, the depression system could intensify move towards Oman after entering the Arabian Sea and form into Cyclone Shaheen.

A similar rare movement of cyclonic formations from the west coast to the east coast was seen in 2018 when Cyclone Gaja crossed the Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry coast in November and weakened into a depression, only to re-emerge as a fresh depression over the Arabian Sea the next day.

Impact of Cyclone Gulab

Meanwhile, heavy rains pounded several parts of Telangana even as Cyclone Gulab weakened into a deep depression. The IMD has issued further warnings of heavy rain that is expected to continue even on Tuesday in several parts of the state.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao took stock of the situation across the affected parts of the state with Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar.

The chief minister said all Telangana government offices, including schools, colleges and educational institutions would remain closed on Tuesday as well due to heavy rains.

The IMD has issued red alert for 14 districts in Telangana that have been warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Isolated places Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal (Rural), Warangal (Urban), Janagaon, Siddipet, Kamareddy are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
