Delhi to reel under heatwave today, relief likely from tomorrow

New Delhi, May 30, 2024: Heatwave conditions will continue to prevail in Delhi today, a day after the city recorded India’s highest-ever temperature with the mercury soaring to 52.9 degrees Celsius at Mungeshpur weather station.

 

Delhi’s primary weather station, Safdarjung observatory, on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, the highest in 79 years, and 2nd highest ever. It was 46.7 degrees Celsius on June 17, 1945.

However, some relief is likely in the city from tomorrow, as the weather department has predicted a partly cloudy sky, with very light rain/drizzle accompanied by gusty winds (speed 25-35 kmph).

"Delhi will witness partly cloudy sky, possibility of thunderstorm/duststorm with very light rain/drizzle accompanied by gusty winds (speed 25-35 kmph)," according to the seven-day forecast.

Delhi on Wednesday recorded India’s highest-ever temperature when the mercury reached 52.9 degrees Celsius at the city’s Mungeshpur weather station. The IMD officials, however, later said the record-breaking temperature could be either due to an "error in the sensor or the local factor (s)".

Hours later, the city also received light-intensity rain with gusty winds, providing much-needed respite from the scorching heat.

Severe heatwave conditions accompanied by dry weather will continue in many parts of the country till June 1, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said, adding that prevailing conditions will gradually reduce over Northwest & Central India in the next 2–3 days.

"Heatwave to severe heat wave conditions at most places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, at many places in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh," the weather department said.

Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions very likely in isolated pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha on 29 and 30 and isolated heat wave conditions on May 31 and June 1.

"Warm night conditions at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorm/lightning in isolated places in Uttarakhand accompanied by gusty winds (speed 40-50 KMPH)," it added.
