Mumbai June15, 2011 : Three people have been detained in connection with the murder of J Dey, a senior investigative journalist working with MiD DAY who was shot in broad daylight in Mumbai on Saturday.
The men reportedly belong to the Chhota Shakeel gang. Sources say J Dey had exposed the gang in a story on sandalwood smuggling and that may have led to his murder.
The three men are being interrogated by the special squad of the Mumbai police and have been identified as Mateen, Iqbal Hateyla and Anwar.
Dey was shot outside a mall close to his home in the suburban Powai area of the city. According to police, four motorcycle-borne men fired at Mr Dey.
Mr Dey was considered to be arguably India’s best-connected writer on the Mumbai underworld.
