Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark.
The case against Rahul Gandhi was filed on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Purnesh Modi for his remark, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?"
Reacting to this, several opposition leaders voiced their opinions on social media, calling it a "direct murder of democracy."
