Fire breaks out at Bengal’s Burdwan medical college Covid ward, 1 patient dies

Burdwan, Jan 29, 2022: One Covid patient was killed after a fire broke out in the Covid ward of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, triggering panic among patients and relatives.

 

The patient has been identified as Sandhya Roy, 60, a resident of East Burdwan district.

Hospital sources said the fire broke out in the wee hours of Saturday morning in the Radharani ward of the hospital. It has been transformed into a special ward for Covid treatment since the pandemic broke out.

Initially, relatives of patients tried to douse the fire. One fire tender was called in and police rushed to the spot.

After one hour, they were able to control the fire. Though the hospital refused to accept any failure on their part, a five-member investigative team has been formed to ascertain the cause.

Prabir Sengupta, Principal of Burdwan Medical College Hospital told India Today a forensic investigation will also be done.
