Director general of state police SP Vaid tweeted that the militants were killed while infiltrating in Dulanja village in north Kashmir’s border area of Uri.

Vaid added that it was a joint operation by the state police, Indian Army and the central armed police forces.

Further details about the encounter are awaited as search operations are on, an army spokesperson said.

The killings come exactly a fortnight after five soldiers and three militants were killed when militants stormed a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in south Kashmir on New Year eve. The JEM had taken responsibility for the suicide attack.

The JEM also claimed responsibility for an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that left four policemen dead in Sopore town on January 6.
