Flash Floods in Guwahati, Seven Dead in Last 15 Hours

Guwahati, June 27, 2014:  Seven people have died in the last 15 hours in Guwahati after flash floods. Large parts of the city are submerged under water.

Guwahati Three people died after a wall collapsed in the heavy rain that began pounding the city last night. Four were electrocuted.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has conducted a tour of the worst-affected areas.

The National Disaster Response Force has already started rescue operations in East Guwahati, which have been cut off by the floods. The state government has opened up helplines for the public.

Five districts in the state - Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Sonitpur and Udalguri -- have also been affected by the floods, according to an official release by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark at Neematighat. Authorities have temporarily suspended the plying of boats on the river with immediate effect.

Over 30,000 people have already been affected by the floods.
