While the manner in which the search engine algorithm functions is complex, one of the reasons why his name is being thronged up on searching ’Bad Chief Minister of India’ is due to the negative publicity he has received over the Sabarimala temple row.

Scores of netizens have vented their anger against Vijayan, blaming him for the chaos prevalent in the temple town. The decision by his government to implement a recent Supreme Court ruling allowing the entry of women in menstruating age inside the Lord Ayyappa shrine is the "source of a conflict", said several commentators on social media.
