New Delhi, Dec 09, 2015:  The opposition Congress today forced repeated disruptions in Parliament over the National Herald case, in which its two top leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have to appear in court.

The government and opposition sparred in the Lok Sabha after Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that Congress leaders were being targeted.

"This is happening to the entire Opposition. If someone doesn’t agree with you, you are trying to harass them," Mr Kharge said, raising the National Herald case.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said: "The government has nothing to do with it. It was a court order. Here they are threatening the judiciary through the Parliament... This is tanashahi (dictatorship). The Congress is not ready to accept verdict of the people in the elections."

Protests over "politics of vendetta" led to repeated adjournments in the Rajya Sabha.

As soon as the upper house assembled, Congress members rushed to the centre of the house, shouting slogans like: "Modi teri tanashahi nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi (dictatorship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be tolerated)."

This morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Sonia Gandhi a happy birthday.

"On her birthday, greetings to Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi. May Almighty bless her with long life & good health," PM Modi tweeted. Mrs Gandhi, who turns 69 today, also received a phone call from Venkaiah Naidu to wish her.

The courtesies came as the government seeks to emphasise that it has nothing to do with a case in which Sonia Gandhi and her son and deputy Rahul Gandhi have been ordered to appear in court to face allegations that they illegally acquired property worth Rs. 5,000 crore belonging to the National Herald newspaper.
