Bangalore, Dec 23 : The Bangalore police has solved the murder of 29-year-old Payal Surekha with the arrest of her alleged killer , a gym instructor, in Cuttack, Orissa. The killer has confessed to the murder

The accused James alias Vincent (25) used to work at a gym owned by Anant Narayan Mishra, Payal’s husband, in Cuttack.

According to police, Payal had regular fights with James, as the latter had fallen in unrequitted love with her. Payal had warned him several times, eventually leading to his dismissal a few months ago. James had then threatened Payal with dire consequences.

Meanwhile, Anant Mishra moved to Bangalore with his family and started a gym at Thyagarajanagar along with his friend. He continued to be in touch with James and even invited him to visit his gym if he ever came to the city.

James arrived in the third week of December and telephoned Mishra. Mishra welcomed James and showed him around the gym before taking him to his flat in Lakshminagar in J P Nagar.

Payal, who was at home, didn’t like the idea of James visiting their house and picked up a fight with him. She also asked her husband to send him away but Mishra advised her to forget the past. A humiliated James left, saying he would return to Cuttack. Mishra told James that he too planned to visit Cuttack in a couple of days.

On hearing about Mishra’s impending visit, James hatched a plot to kill Payal. He stayed back at a lodge in Majestic and called Mishra from a telephone booth to confirm whether he would be visiting Cuttack. When Mishra told him that he would be in Cuttack till December 19, James decided to kill Payal on December 17, a government holiday, when Payal would be home.

He reached J P Nagar at 10.30 am and surveyed the area before entering Payal’s house. Around 11.30 am, he went to Payal’s house and killed her by slitting her throat. He also took a laptop, some jewellery and Rs 30,000 to make it seem like a murder for gain.

By 12.30 pm, he returned to Majestic, took a bus to Hyderabad and from there flew to Cuttack, a senior police officer said.

After the murder, police initially suspected Mishra’s involvement following accusations from Payal’s family. They didn’t even allow him to take part in his wife’s funeral. But when they couldn’t establish his role, they suspected the involvement of Avinash, a bank employee. But they drew a blank there as well.

Finally, Mishra gave the names of possible suspects inlcuding James. A team of policemen went to Cuttack and questioned James who confessed to the murder.
