Hatras

In September 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was raped and critically injured at Boolgarhi in Western Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. Four upper caste Thakurs of the same village were the accused in the case. She succumbed to her injuries 15 days later while receiving treatment in Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital.

The girl’s family said it is not satisfied with the court’s verdict and said it would appeal the case in the high court.

HATHRAS RAPE CASE

The rape case triggered massive outrage in 20202 with protests and calls for justice. The controversy also took a political turn after the authorities took the woman’s body from the hospital without the family’s permission. They also did not allow her family to perform her last rites and they carried it out in the middle of the night.

The four accused had tried to strangle her to death as she resisted their rape attempt and in the process, she also ended up biting her tongue and suffering a severe cut on it. The accused have been arrested.
