Ottawa, Sep 25, 2023: Indian Missions in Canada’s Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver were surrounded with barricades after protest calls by Khalistani group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). The extremist outfit has called for protests outside Indian diplomatic missions in main Canadian cities.
In addition to this, local police and federal police personnel were also deployed to monitor the situation.
The Khalistani group called on its members for a protest a week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged New Delhi’s “potential link” to the murder of a Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in British Columbia.Trudeau said last week Canada was pursuing "credible allegations" that agents of the Indian government could be involved in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in Surrey on June 18.
The government swiftly denied any role in the killing and described the allegations as "absurd". The accusations have sparked tensions between the two countries, with each nation expelling diplomats, and New Delhi suspending visas for Canadians.
Jatinder Singh Grewal, a director for Sikh for Justice in Canada, told Reuters on Sunday that his organisation will lead the demonstrations outside the Indian embassies and consulates in Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver to increase public awareness over Nijjar’s killing.
"We are asking Canada to expel the Indian ambassador," Grewal said.
