Bengaluru, Mar 15, 2022: Hours after the Karnataka High Court gave its verdict on the hijab row case on Tuesday, students of Surapura Taluk Kembavi Government PU College in Yadgir, Karnataka, boycotted the exam and left.
The students had a preparatory examination and they boycotted after the verdict was pronounced. The exam started at 10 am and was supposed to get over by 1 pm.
The principal of the college, Shakuntala (uses first name), said that she appealed to the students to follow the orders of Karnataka High Court. “But they refused and walked out of the examination hall. A total of 35 students walked out of the college,” she said.
Meanwhile, the students said they would discuss the verdict with the parents and then decide whether they would attend the class without wearing hijab.
“We will write our exam wearing hijab. If they ask us to remove hijab, we will not write exams,” a student said.
The Karnataka HC’s three-judge bench has ruled that wearing hijabs does not fall under the essential practice of Islam. They also said that the prescription of uniforms is a reasonable restriction and students can’t oppose it.
