An under-construction church in Kaimri village near Hisar was vandalised by a group and the cross replaced with an idol of Hanuman, triggering tension in the area in Haryana.

The complainant, Father Subhash Chand of Williwarsh church, stated that the the group fragmented the cross and installed the statue of Hanuman and a flag depicting Lord Ram and threatened to kill him. It was alleged that they stole a cooler and some items from the worship place that was under construction.

Modi deeply concerned

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the gangrape of an elderly nun in West Bengal and the vandalisation of a church in Haryana, and sought immediate reports on the incidents.

"PM is deeply concerned about the incidents in Hisar, Haryana and Nadia, West Bengal," the PMO tweeted on Tuesday

Chief Minister ML Khattar had on Monday said there were reports that the priest of the church was involved in conversion activities in the area. The attack, he indicated, may have been in reaction to that.

Earlier this year, there were a series of attacks on churches in neighbouring New Delhi.
