Bangalore, Sep 22, 2014: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully test fired the main liquid engine of Mangalyaan for four seconds. The engine that had been idle for nine months responded to instructions efficiently.
"We had perfect burn for 4 seconds as programmed. The trajectory has been corrected," ISRO said.
The 475 kg (dry mass) spacecraft had been programmed for the fourth course (trajectory) at 2.30 p.m. to ensure its smooth insertion into the Martian orbit Sep 24.
The spacecraft also entered the Martian sphere of influence on schedule.
"Our navigators’ calculation shows that our Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has entered the gravitational sphere of influence of Mars around 9 a.m.," a senior Indian space agency official.
