Bengaluru, June 4, 20223: Karnataka’s Animal Husbandary and Veterinary sciences minister, K Venkatesh, on Saturday said that farmers have been facing a tough time maintaining aged cattle and disposing of the dead. The minister further questioned, "If one can slaughter buffaloes and bulls, what is wrong with slaughtering cows?"

He also said that the amendment of the bill would be in the larger interest of farmers in the state.

This comes at a time when the ruling Congress in Karnataka is mulling implementation of the strict Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle (Amendment) Bill, 2020. The bill was passed in the state legislative Assembly in 2021 by the then ruling BJP.

When the bill was passed in the Karnataka Assembly by the BJP government back in December 2020, Congress staged a walkout in protest from the VIdhana Soudha.
