Islamabad, April 04, 2022: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday proposed the name of former Justice (R) Gulzar Ahmed, former Chief Justice of Pakistan, as caretaker PM.

This follows after Pakistan President Alvi issued an order de-notifying Imran Khan as the prime minister of the country with immediate effect on Sunday night. However, President Alvi issued another order later, asking Imran Khan to continue as interim prime minister until a “caretaker prime minister” is chosen under Article 224 A of Pakistan’s constitution.

On Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced that Imran Khan has nominated former CJP as caretaker PM.

“In response to the President’s letter, after consultation and approval from the PTI Corps Committee, Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker Prime Minister,” PTI tweeted.

According to the Dawn newspaper, Justice Ahmed was sworn in as the 27th chief justice of Pakistan on December 21, 2019. He served as the chief justice till February 2022.

Born in Karachi, Gulzar Ahmed enrolled as an advocate on January 18, 1986, and joined the High Court on April 4, 1988. He became an advocate of the Supreme Court on September 15, 2001. Gulzar Ahmed was elevated as Judge of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Aug 27, 2002. He was notified as Senior Puisne Judge of the SHC on Feb 14, 2011, and was elevated to the Supreme Court later that year.

Imran Khan nominated former CJP Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker PM of Pakistan on April 4, 2022.

On Sunday, April 3, Imran Khan survived the Opposition’s attempt to oust him from power after a no-confidence motion against him was rejected by the National Assembly deputy speaker, who claimed it was a “foreign conspiracy”. Afterwards, Imran Khan advised the President to dissolve the National Assembly.

Accordingly, the National Assembly has been dissolved and elections will take place in Pakistan within the next 90 days, as per the government.

Meanwhile, the Opposition has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, which is hearing the plea over the dissolution of assembly.
