New Delhi, Aug 4, 2011: A global perception survey has named India as the fourth most dangerous country in the world for women, with female foeticide and human trafficking being cited as the major reasons.

Informing this in the Rajya Sabha today, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, however, said the Government was not aware about the content and methodology adopted for the survey and can therefore, "not comment on the credibility of the conclusion it has drawn".

In a written reply to CPI(M) member Moinul Hassan, she said the survey conducted by Trust Law, a legal news service of Thomson Reuters Foundation was based on samples of 213 gender experts across five continents.

Although she said the government was implementing short and long-term interventions, in the form of schemes and legislations to tackle the problem.

It has adopted a multi-pronged strategy which includes legislative measures, advocacy, awareness generation and programmes for socio-economic empowerment of women, she said.

The survey by Trust Law has been named Afghanistan as the most dangerous place in the world for women while Congo has been placed second and Pakistan was in the third place.
