India records single-day spike of over 1.31 lakh cases, 780 deaths

New Delhi, April 09, 2021:      India reported 1,31,968 new Covid-19 cases and 780 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its update on Friday morning.

With fresh Covid-19 cases, the country positive cases tally has shot up to 1,30,60,542, while the total active cases stands at 9,79,608. More than 1.19 crore people have recovered from the infection so far.

As of Friday, a total of 1,67,642 people have succumbed to the Covid-19 infection in the country.

The states and UTs reporting a large surge included Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab, while several other states also reported a lot more new cases than in the recent past in what is being called the second wave of this deadly pandemic.

Among the states with a rapid surge in infections, Maharashtra on Thursday reported 56,286 cases, Chhattisgarh 10,662 cases, Uttar Pradesh 8,490, Delhi 7,437 cases and Karnataka 6,570 cases.

INDIA SURPASSES US TO BECOME FASTEST VACCINATING COUNTRY

Even as India once again crossed 1 lakh-mark in Covid-19 cases, the country surpassed the United States to become the fastest vaccinating country in the world, the government said on Thursday. A total of 9,43,34,262 people have been inoculated in the country.

Meanwhile, some states including Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh cited a shortage of vaccine stocks. Vaccine shortages were also reported from several parts of Uttar Pradesh which led to the shutting down of vaccination centres in Noida, Ghaziabad and Varanasi.

RISING COVID-19 CASES IN 2ND WAVE CONCERNING: PM MODI

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it is matter of "serious concern" that the growth rate of daily cases in the second Covid-19 wave is higher than the first wave. He said people have also become "more casual" in their approach towards the viral disease.

Addressing a meeting on Covid-19 with chief ministers, PM Modi said, "India has crossed peak of the first wave, and this time, the growth rate of cases is higher."

PM Modi also urged the states to enhance testing and said they should focus on micro-containment strategies, taking lessons from the past one year of fighting the pandemic.
