Bangalore,Mar 31, 2012: Abdul Rehman Infant on Saturday evening took over charge as the Director General and Inspector General of Police (Concurrent Charge) of Karnataka police from Shankar Bidari who was posted as Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.

Infant - DGPThe change of guard came in the wake of the Karnataka High Court upholding a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order striking down Bidari’s appointment to the top police post. Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said the post of DG&IGP was a concurrent charge for Infant who would continue to be DGP (Fire and Emergency Services) as well. Gowda also said that the government would move the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict, as it had to “protect the interests of the State”. At a simple function at the police chief office where most senior IPS officers were present, Bidari handed over the baton to Infant to symbolise handing over of the charge.

After the ceremony, Infant said he was “extremely happy” to be there. “This should have happened earlier, but could not happen due to certain things,” he remarked. I have only two priorities. First, I will uphold the rule of law and expect my colleagues consciously and scrupulously to follow and enforce the law. Second, I want to reinstall a sense of discipline among officers.
