New Delhi, Jan 30, 2020: An unidentified man allegedly shot a protesting student of the Jamia Millia Islamia during an anti-CAA protest at Jamia area in Delhi on Thursday. The accused has been taken into custody, police have said.
The incident took place when protesters, including students of Jamia Millia Islamia, were marching towards Rajghat to hold a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens.
A video clip shared by news agency ANI shows a man brandishing pistol while walking backwards in Delhi’s Jamia area during the protest near Holy Family hospital in Jamia. While the accused has been taken into custody, the injured student has been rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Jamia area.
The man who opened fire at people protesting the CAA is identifies as Rambhakt Gopal. Selfie-footage posted by the attacker, who identifies himself as Rambhakt Gopal, shows him walking around the venue of the protest dressed in a black sleeveless bomber jacket and looking around furtively, as if trying to decide on his target.
Rambhakt Gopal, who was heard shouting "Yeh lo azaadi (here’s your freedom)", managed to injure a student -- Shadaab Farukh -- before he was overpowered by the others around him. Even as the protester was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences with blood dripping down his left hand, the venue descended into chaos.
