Jamnagar, Dec 04, 2021: A person who travelled from Zimbabwe to Gujarat’s Jamnagar has tested positive for the Omicron variant of coronavirus, the state health department has confirmed.
The 72-year-old came to Jamnagar via South Africa two days ago. After the man tested positive for Covid-19 during screening at the airport, the authorities sent his sample to Pune for genome sequencing.
The genome sequencing revealed that the person was infected with the newly discovered Omicron variant of coronavirus.
The man is fully vaccinated. At least 10 people who came in contact with him have been quarantined and their test reports are awaited.
At present, the man has been moved to an isolation ward in Jamnagar where his condition is stable.
This is the third confirmed case of Omicron variant in India. Earlier, two cases of Omicron were detected in Karnataka.
The first patient, a 66-year-old, came to the state from South Africa on November 20 and left India seven days later. The second patient is a health care worker and has no travel history, said government sources.
