More houses in Joshimath developed cracks, forcing residents to evacuate and rush out from the comfort of their homes in this bone-chilling winter and move to temporary shelters set up by the government authorities.

Chamoli district administration said that over 600 buildings in 9 wards have developed cracks and 82 families have been rescued and shifted to safe locations so far.

The Chamoli DM said that Joshimath has been declared disaster-prone, adding that construction activities have been banned in Joshimath and nearby areas.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday appealed to everyone to work as a team to save Joshimath, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is monitoring the developments of the region.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has released an additional amount of Rs 11 crore for Chamoli for safety and rescue operations.

Joshimath is the gateway to famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib and is known as the place where Adi Guru Shankaracharya subjected himself to penance centuries ago.

The central government has set up a panel to conduct a "rapid study" of the occurrence of land subsidence and its impact on Joshimath.
